Chicago Resources and Recommendations
-
Our food & drink recommendations are our local favorites, and primarily skew casual, with some exceptions. They are places we have patronized and recommend for the food/drink, value, atmosphere, and/or service.
Collectivo Coffee (Wicker Park): our favorite Milwaukee-based staple for coffee, tea, and good breakfast (burritos & baked oatmeal are delicious)
Amaru (Bucktown): really amazing Latin American; primarily small plates and craft cocktails.
Lucia’s (Bucktown): neighborhood Italian restaurant and deli (great sandwiches, soups, lunch options - primarily take-out on the deli side)
Tricycle (Bucktown): neighborhood pub & eatery; great chicken noodle soup!
Pasta Bowl (Bucktown): solid casual Italian/pasta spot.
Pasta Palazzo (Lincoln Park): small, casual Italian eatery with great pasta dishes
Ethiopian Diamond (Edgewater): another Chicago staple and our favorite Ethiopian in the US
Star of Siam (Thai, River North)
Tryzub Ukranian Kitchen (UK Village)
Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits (Logan Square)
Sugar Moon Bakery (Logan Square): open only until 2pm or until sold out - go early! One of the best bakeries - don’t forget to try their tahini chocolate chip cookie, scones, and pretty much anything they make. Savory and sweet options.
Tango Sur (Southport, Argentinian Steak house)
Andies (Andersonville): mediterranean dining with delicious healthy options and a full bar
Hoosier Mama Pie Company (West Town): our favorite pie shop in Chicago.
Queen Mary Tavern (Wicker Park): cozy, classy, neighborhood British-themed tavern
Yaba’s Food & Middle Eastern Grill (Palmer Square/Humboldt Park): The front is a food market, the rear is a middle eastern grill. Take-out only. Family owned and great food.
The Gage (Loop- across from the Art Institute): vintage gastropub setting, fully bar, and upscale comfort food. Good whisky selection. Excellent burgers and fries. House-made ice cream.
Acanto (Loop - right next to Gage): Italian. We’re partial to their lunch, particularly the whitefish panini. Excellent service.
Glenn’s Diner (Ravenswood): casual seafood/fresh fish restaurant. Great for brunch, lunch & dinner.
Marty’s Martini Bar (Andersonville): Tiny, cozy spot with knock-your-socks off martinis.
Black dog Gelato (UK Village): really quality, local gelato.
George’s Ice Cream & Sweets (Andersonville): local shop with high quality ice cream, bakery and sweets.
Green Tea Japanese & Sushi (Lincoln Park): Small neighborhood Japanese & sushi. Affordable and BYOB only.
Piece Pizza (Wicker Park): our favorite Chicago pizza (and brewery) - close to NY style, but their own.
Pequod’s Pizza (Lincoln Park): if you don’t like deep dish pizza, you may actually love Pequod’s. Their caramelized crusts are second to none.
Small Bar (Logan Square): Local pub with really good pub fare.
90 Miles Cuban Cafe (Bucktown): great BYOB options for sangria & mojitos.
Club Lucky (Bucktown): supper-club style Italian and cocktails.
Green Mill (Uptown): historic jazz club: check out their music schedule online, get there early, and cash only. This place is legit.

Oak Park: near the end of the Green line CTA, a great walkable neighborhood with shops, restaurants, and of course a legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, including his studio & home museum.
